NPC Chairman Aminu Yusuf Dies In Abuja After Prolonged Illness

The Chairman of the National Population Commission, Dr. Aminu Yusuf Wushishi, is dead.
A source within the Commission told Daily Trust that Yusuf died at Nizamiya Hospital in Abuja after Jummah prayer on Friday, August 28, 2026.
According to the source, he fell ill five days ago while preparing for a trip to Rwanda and had been battling diabetes-related complications. He had reportedly collapsed on a number of occasions at his office and during public functions.
Daily Trust reports that Yusuf collapsed on March 13 during a press briefing and official launch of the APLS 13 Report, where he had difficulty breathing and was resuscitated by doctors before being taken to hospital.
The source said his remains had been transported to Minna, Niger State, for burial Friday evening, in accordance with Islamic rites. The NPC’s official statement earlier said burial is expected Saturday, August 29.
Yusuf was appointed by President Bola Tinubu in 2025 and sworn in December 3, 2025 alongside two other board members, succeeding Nasir Isa Kwarra. State House identified him as 65-year-old at swearing-in. He holds BSc Biology and Masters International Affairs and Diplomacy from ABU Zaria, and doctorate in International Relations from Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
He died less than nine months after assuming office, aged 66.
