Sokoto Gov’s First Son, Aliyu Ahmad Aliyu, Becomes One Of Nigeria’s Youngest PhD Holders At 26

Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto’s first son has defended his PhD at the age of 26, becoming one of the youngest PhD holders in Nigeria.

Aliyu Ahmad Aliyu recently defended his PhD in Energy Systems at Coventry University, United Kingdom at the age of 26.

Aliyu began his higher education journey at Coventry University, where he completed his first degree at the age of 20. His early academic experience at the university provided the foundation for his subsequent specialisation in energy resources and his progression into postgraduate research.

He later pursued a Master’s degree at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, completing the degree at the age of 21 where he focused on understanding how technological and policy ambitions develop to energy adoption.

Following his Master’s studies, Aliyu returned to Coventry University to undertake doctoral research, culminating in the successful defence of his PhD at the age of 26.

His doctoral research examines the social dimensions of renewable energy adoption, with particular attention to how public perceptions, and institutional dynamics can influence sustainable energy transitions in Nigeria.

Beyond academia, Aliyu is interested in applying research and knowledge to practical challenges in the energy sector and in contributing to conversations around sustainable development, youth empowerment, and Africa’s future energy systems.
