Hashtag #TMG ‘Tinubu Must Go’ Flood Northern Nigeria as Kano-Based Lawyer Abba Hikima Launches Movement

A new grassroots political campaign tagged Tinubu Must Go (TMG) has gained significant momentum across Northern Nigeria, with AI-generated images of individuals wearing customized “TINUBU MUST GO” shirts flooding social media platforms. The movement, which is driven by human rights activists, and lawyers Barrister Abba Hikima and Hamza Nuhu Dantani, calling for a common front to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

The campaign was initiated by Kano-based lawyer and activist, Barrister Abba Hikima, who outlined the foundational principles of the movement in a viral post titled “TMG a Takaice” (TMG in Brief). According to him, the only solution for Nigeria is to ensure the defeat of Tinubu’s administration in 2027, it is necessary for citizens to set aside personal and political differences to unite behind a single candidate, and opposition leaders must dialogue and produce a consensus candidate. He added that if opposition leaders fail to agree, voters as the majority will set aside their differences and collectively choose one formidable candidate to salvage the nation.

To promote the campaign, Barrister Hikima pledged to produce and distribute 1,000 customized TMG T-shirts free of charge, a promise he made on his verified Facebook page.

The digital push of the movement has been amplified by AI-generated T-shirts bearing the inscription “TINUBU MUST GO! A Common Front To Defeat Tinubu And Salvage Nigeria” with a crossed-out image of the President. Some of the people who have been featured in the campaign include Kano based Lawyer , Barrister Abba Hikima human rights lawyer Barrister Hamza Nuhu Dantani, NDC political praise singer under the Kwankwasiyya movement Tijjani Hussaini, and politician and Chairman of Arewa Media Group Organization, Abdulmajeed Almustapha, popularly known as Kwamanda.

Shedding more light on the movement in an interview on Labarai24 TV, Barrister Hamza Nuhu Dantani explained that TMG is not a formal organization with executive structures or leadership portfolios, but rather an awareness campaign and a struggle to salvage the nation. He said the movement was established due to the intense hardship in the country, particularly as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy and other economic policies of the Tinubu administration that have pushed Nigerians into severe suffering.

According to Dantani, the goal of the movement is to enlighten the public and put pressure on opposition leaders to unite. He stressed that if opposition leaders refuse to unite because of personal ambition, then the masses and supporters who hold the ballot power will set their differences aside, select one strong candidate and collectively back him to defeat Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

  2. Rising prices of food, petrol, transportation, housing, and other essential commodities, and their impact on the cost of living.
  3. Increased taxation, levies, and other charges amid continuing economic hardship.
  4. The disparity between budgetary allocations and actual implementation and delivery of approved projects and programmes.
  5. Persistent insecurity and concerns regarding the effective protection of lives and property across the country.
  6. The status of campaign promises made in 2023, including concerns regarding promises that remain unfulfilled, partially implemented, or delayed.
  7. Concerns regarding unemployment, poverty, economic opportunities, and the overall welfare of citizens, particularly young people.
  8. Concerns regarding the effectiveness, transparency, and accountability of government policies and programmes introduced to address economic hardship.
  9. Respect for the constitutional principle of separation of powers and the independence of democratic institutions.
  10. The Rivers State emergency, including the suspension of elected state officials, and the resulting constitutional questions concerning federalism, democratic mandates, and the autonomy of elected institutions.
  11. Allegations and concerns regarding the use of executive and state powers against opposition figures, political actors, journalists, activists, and government critics.
  12. Concerns regarding the appointment and extension of the tenure of senior security and government officials beyond applicable retirement ages or prescribed service limits, including the elongation of the tenure of selected security heads after reaching their retirement periods.
  13. Allegations concerning the misuse of state institutions and concerns about the weakening of constitutional checks and balances.
  14. Insufficient or uneven improvement in basic public amenities and infrastructure, including electricity, roads, healthcare, water supply, sanitation, and public transportation.
  15. The need for greater transparency and accountability in public expenditure, government contracts, borrowing, debt management, revenue collection, and the utilisation of public funds.

Protection and preservation of constitutional rights, including freedom of expression, freedom of opinion, peaceful assembly, association, political participation, voting, and the right of citizens to support or endorse candidates and political causes of their choice in accordance with the law.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the TMG campaign continues to expand its reach across both digital platforms and local communities in the North, signalling growing grassroots mobilization and increasing demand for opposition unity ahead of the polls.
