BREAKING: Court Grants Bail To ‘Tinubu Must Go’ Protesters In Borno
Five protesters arrested in Borno State over the controversial ” Tinubu Must Go” chants have been granted bail by the court, paving the way for their release.
The protesters are set to regain their freedom once their bail conditions are perfected.
Confirming the development after the court sitting, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Garki Branch, Alkali Askira, said:
“All the accused persons were granted bail, and we are just waiting for the perfection of the bail conditions for them to also regain their freedom.”
Askira lauded the lead defence counsel, Muhammad Abakar, for moving the bail applications which were graciously granted.
He also commended the presiding magistrate for upholding the independence of the judiciary despite the tension the case generated.
“People feel as if the judiciary would be pressed, but I am really impressed with the ruling of His Worship that the independence of the judiciary is asserted today,” he said.
On the reason for the arrest, Askira maintained that chanting against the President is not a criminal offence.
“To hold an opinion is not an offence. I have never seen in any codified law that saying ‘Tinubu Must Go’ is an offence. It’s not! People should not be gagged for expressing their view.”
He however urged youths in Borno to be cautious:
“Borno State is a volatile place politically and otherwise. We should be mindful of what we say, and we should conduct ourselves within the law so that we should not harm the little peace we have.”
