“We Are Christians, Muslims Are Killing Us In Nigeria” — Igbo Man Arrested For Drugs In South Africa Blames Religious Persecution
A 40-year-old Igbo man arrested for drug trafficking in South Africa has blamed religious persecution in Nigeria for his overstay and involvement in illicit drugs, telling South African police that Muslims were killing Christians back home
Police raided his suburban apartment and recovered Crystal Meth and Nyaope.
During interrogation, the suspect claimed religious persecution forced him to remain in South Africa:
“We are Christians in Nigeria. Those Muslim people are killing us. That is why.”
“Something happened, sir. There’s a problem.”
“It’s not that our intention is to sell this thing, but we don’t have any job to do. It’s not that we like what we are doing.”
“This one is Nyaope. The other one is Crystal.”
“I have been selling for 5 to 6 years.”
“Sometimes 50, 20… depending.”
“I came by flight… visiting visa. Three months.”
The South African officer countered his justification:
“Are you trying to tell me that all of you Nigerians that are here, with a visiting visa that expired 5 to 10 years ago, something happened to all of you?”
“So when they are killing you in Nigeria — those Muslim people — then you come and kill us here?”
“Let’s say you’re selling 50 one day. 50 times 365… 109,000. It means in a year, you have sold 109,000 pieces that are destroying each and every single young person of this area. So what do you expect to happen to you? It’s bad, right?”
The suspect admitted:
“It’s bad, chief.”
