Rights Activist Hamza Dantani Hails Zulum’s Mega Teaching Hospital As Historic Legacy
A Borno-based lawyer and human rights activist, Hamza N. Dantani Esq, has commended Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for completing and commissioning the Borno State-owned mega Teaching Hospital, describing it as a historic legacy that will benefit generations.
In a statement on Friday, Dantani said his personal experience following his father’s death on 30th March 2026 and his encounter at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital made him more aware of the challenges facing the healthcare system and the urgent need for modern, well-equipped hospitals in the state.
He said the new Teaching Hospital offers renewed hope by improving access to specialized medical services and reducing the need for residents to travel to Kano, Abuja and other states for treatment.
According to him, the facility will also attract medical professors, specialists and healthcare experts from across Nigeria and around the world, provide training opportunities for medical and healthcare students, create employment opportunities, stimulate economic growth and position Borno as a center for medical education, research and specialized healthcare.
As a rights activist, Dantani said the development is significant because healthcare is connected to protection of human life and dignity under Section 33 (1) of the Constitution, while Section 17(3)(d) of the 1999 Constitution directs the State to ensure suitable and adequate medical and health facilities for all persons under the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy.
He noted that although Section 17(3)(d) is not independently enforceable in court, it expresses an important constitutional objective for government to pursue.
“This is more than a hospital; it is an investment in human life, education, employment, and the future of Borno State,” he said.
He prayed for the governor: “May Allah bless Governor Zulum for this historic legacy and ensure that the hospital is adequately equipped, staffed, and maintained to serve our people effectively for generations to come.”
