IGP Disu Proposes 200% Gratuity, Improved Pension For Retired Police Officers
Retirement security for police officers is at the centre of a fresh reform push as the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, proposes a 200 per cent gratuity and improved pension benefits for retired personnel.
The proposal is currently before a Presidential committee comprising key financial and pension institutions, which is examining sustainable solutions to the long-standing challenges surrounding police retirement benefits.
According to a statement by the Force, the proposed package includes pensions linked to officers’ last salaries, measures to address outstanding liabilities and possible reviews for personnel who have already retired.
The reforms also seek to address discontent over the Contributory Pension Scheme and improve the administration and timely payment of benefits.
The Force noted that although the Federal Government has reportedly cleared pension payment backlogs and introduced increases for some beneficiaries, retired officers continue to seek a more sustainable system that can support them after years of service.
It, however, clarified that the proposal is not yet an approved entitlement, stressing that its implementation will depend on the committee’s recommendations, government approval, funding arrangements and final guidelines.
