2027: I Will Bring Back Fuel Subsidy After Ending Corruption — Peter Obi Vows In Sokoto
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Mr Peter Obi, has promised to reinstate fuel subsidy if elected president in 2027, saying his administration will first remove corruption surrounding it.
Obi made the pledge on Monday at a town hall meeting organised for the Obi/Kwankwaso presidential ticket in Sokoto.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, Obi said the real issue around subsidy is corruption and not the policy itself.
“People are talking about subsidy but what is all about it is corruption. By removing the corruption, I assure you that we will bring back subsidy. The problem of Nigeria is corruption, as such, if elected, we will stop all forms of corruption in every sector of the country,” Obi said.
He urged Nigerians to vote for NDC candidates at all levels in the 2027 general elections, describing the task of fixing the country as a collective responsibility.
The former Anambra governor said his administration would prioritize unity, security and education, and deploy the country’s resources to improve critical sectors. He also pledged to connect all state capitals with railway lines to boost economic activities.
Also speaking, the vice-presidential candidate of the party, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, said the visit to Sokoto was to engage residents and seek their support ahead of the polls. He said the delegation had earlier visited the Sultan of Sokoto who prayed for the success of the ticket.
Kwankwaso said many parts of the country, particularly the North-West, are bedeviled by banditry and kidnapping, adding that the NDC is committed to addressing the challenges.
Earlier, the NDC governorship candidate in Sokoto, Dr Shamsudeen Haido, and the state chairman of the party, Alhaji Bello Yabo, said the town hall was an opportunity for residents to hear directly from the presidential candidates.
