Gov Alia Fumes Over Killing Of 4 Policemen, 7 Others In Benue, Vows Justice
Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has condemned in strong terms the deadly attack on Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area, which left four police officers and seven civilians dead.
Governor Alia, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, on Friday, described the attack as despicable, barbaric and a direct assault on the peace-loving people of Ayilamo.
“This despicable act is an attack on the peace-loving people of Ayilamo and a grave threat to the security and stability of Benue State,” Alia said.
The governor said he was particularly pained by the killing of the four policemen, noting that it underscores the enormous sacrifices security personnel make in the line of duty.
“The reported killing of four law enforcement officers is particularly painful and underscores the enormous sacrifices being made by security personnel in the line of duty,” he said.
Alia commiserated with the families of the deceased, the people of Ayilamo and the Inspector-General of Police over the loss.
“We honour their courage and sacrifice and pray that God grants their families, colleagues, and loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
The governor also commended the State Security Service, SSS, in Benue and Nasarawa States for what he described as a prompt and professional operation that led to the arrest of three suspects allegedly connected to the attack.
He said the arrests could help establish circumstances surrounding the incident and urged the Service to intensify investigation.
“We urge the SSS to intensify its investigation and make the best use of the information obtained from the suspects in its custody,” Alia said.
“Every available lead should be diligently followed to identify and arrest the remaining accomplices, sponsors, collaborators, and other persons connected with the attack. All those found culpable must face the full weight of the law.”
Governor Alia assured residents that his administration will continue to work with security agencies to prevent further attacks, restore peace and protect lives, while urging residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies.
The attack occurred on Thursday evening when suspected armed bandits invaded the community, engaging police in a seven-hour gun battle before being repelled.
