Man Dies In Fatal Road Accident On His Way To Mother’s Funeral After Announcing Her Death On Facebook

Potiskum, Yobe State has been thrown into deep mourning after a family lost a mother and her son on the same day in two separate deaths linked by one funeral journey.

Hajiya Ruqayya Alkali Umaru known as Ayyah, the matriarch of the Alkali family, died in the early hours of Sunday, September 20, 2026.

Her son, a medical Dr. Dauda Gambo Alkali [Baba Alh.], was on his way from Abuja to Potiskum to attend her funeral when tragedy struck. According to family and community sources, Dauda and his close associate and brother, ACP Muhammad Alkali, were involved in a fatal motor accident at Dakatsalle on Abuja road.

Arewa Updates reported that Fatima Alkali, a family member, confirmed the deaths, while the Fika Emirate stated the accident happened on Sunday as they were traveling for the mother’s burial.

A close associate and family spokesman, Gambo Muhammad Maisarauta, who also confirmed the incident, posted a heartbreaking message that in English reads:

“INNALILLAHI WA’INNA ILAIHI RAJI’UN! We are in deep sorrow and grief over the death of our mother, Hajiya Ruqayya Alkali Umaru, whom Allah took this morning. In the midst of this great sorrow, we have been hit by another extremely painful and shocking tragedy. Her son, Daud Gambo [Baba Alh.] was on his way to his mother’s funeral, when Allah decreed that he would be involved in a motor accident at Dakatsalle, which led to his death”.

The funeral prayers for Dr. Dauda Gambo Alkali and ACP Muhammad Alkali were held on Monday, September 21, 2026, at 10:00 am at Kofar Alkali Kalli in Potiskum. Hajiya Ruqayya had been buried earlier in Potiskum on Sunday.

The Alkali family and the entire Potiskum community have described the incident as one of the most painful losses in recent time.
