Trump Slams Norway, Says Nobel Peace Prize Award To Navi Pillay An “Indelible Stain On The Country”
United States President Donald Trump has again criticised the Norwegian Nobel Committee after failing to win the Nobel Peace Prize, describing this year’s decision as “disgraceful and embarrassing” and an “indelible stain on the country of Norway.”
The prestigious prize was on Friday awarded to former International Criminal Court judge and former UN human rights chief, Navi Pillay, 85, for her efforts to promote peace and international law.
Hours after the announcement, Trump, speaking at a rally in Syracuse, New York, said he had “never heard” of the “mystery person” who won the prize.
“This is an indelible stain on the country of Norway. We will not forget,” Trump told his supporters.
Trump, who has been outspoken about his desire to win the prize, repeated his claim that he had settled eight wars and was “about to settle or win two more,” without providing evidence.
“The Nobel Peace Prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilisation,” he said.
It is the second year running that Trump is missing out on the prize. In 2025, the award went to Venezuelan opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado, a decision the White House then described as placing “politics over peace.”
Last year, Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, had explained to Trump that it was an independent committee based in Norway, not the Norwegian government, that decides who receives the prize.
According to the Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Jorgen Watne Frydnes, Pillay was recognised for paving the way for a “more comprehensive global legal order” and for being instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide are prosecuted.
Reacting to her win from the Nuremberg Palace of Justice, Pillay said, “it must be a joke.”
“If you clap a little bit more I may share this prize with Trump,” she joked, drawing applause.
It would be recalled that in January this year, Machado gifted her Nobel medal to Trump during a meeting at the White House, saying it was in recognition of his commitment to her country’s freedom.
Trump had described it on social media as “a wonderful gesture of mutual respect.”
The Nobel Committee, however, clarified that the prize is not transferable.
“Once a Nobel Prize is announced, it cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to others. The decision is final and stands for all time,” the committee said in a statement.
