Rights Activist Hails Borno Police For Not Exposing Suspects’ Faces, Says EFCC Should Learn

A lawyer and rights activist, Barrister Hamza Nuhu Dantani, has commended CP Naziru Abdulmajid and the PPRO, ASP Nahum Daso Kenneth, for their professionalism in handling the parade of suspects without exposing their faces or identities.

Dantani said the approach demonstrates respect for the presumption of innocence, human dignity, privacy and the right to a fair hearing.

According to him, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, should learn from this approach, unlike the practice of publicly displaying suspects in mugshots while their cases are pending before the courts.

“I commend CP Naziru Abdulmajid and the PPRO ASP Nahum Daso Kenneth of the Borno State Police Command for their professionalism in handling the parade of suspects without exposing their faces or identities.

The EFCC should learn from this approach. Unlike the practice of publicly displaying suspects in mugshots while their cases are pending before the courts, law enforcement agencies must respect the presumption of innocence, human dignity, privacy, and the right to a fair hearing,” Dantani said.

He cited Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution which provides that every suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

“Under Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution, every suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

Fighting crime must never come at the expense of fundamental human rights.

May God bless the Borno State Police Command for upholding the rule of law and respecting human rights,” he added.
