Tragedy struck Awka, the Anambra State capital, late Sunday when unidentified gunmen shot dead a popular comedian and media personality, Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as ‘Aiza Nwosu’ and ‘Azia Nwosu’, alongside another middle-aged man.

The two victims were killed at separate locations by the same assailants. The comedian was killed along S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, Awka, while the second victim was shot dead along Capital City Road, Amaenyi, Awka.

According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants, numbering about three and driving in a tinted silver Toyota Corolla, trailed the comedian from his home, double-crossed his vehicle and shot him dead, leaving him in a pool of blood inside his car.

“As they drove some distance away, they also shot another victim dead by the roadside, dispossessed him of his belongings and fled. They fired some shots into the air before leaving the scene in a commando-like manner,” an eyewitness said.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, August 30, created panic in the area as residents scampered for safety. Videos circulating online showed the lifeless bodies of the victims lying in pools of blood as onlookers gathered.

While the motive for the killings is yet to be ascertained, some residents linked the attacks to cult-related activities.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Monday, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command has commenced investigation and intensified manhunt for the perpetrators.

“The command has condemned in the strongest terms the gunshot attacks carried out by unidentified gunmen in Awka on Sunday, August 30, 2026, which resulted in the deaths of two persons,” Ikenga said.

He said operatives recovered the bodies from both locations and took them to a hospital where they were confirmed dead. Items recovered from the scene include the sum of N7,550, one Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers.

The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Ama, described the killings as unacceptable and a direct affront to the peace and security of the state.

He has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, for discreet and comprehensive investigation, while patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering have been intensified across Awka and adjoining areas.

The Police called on community leaders, residents, motorists and business owners with credible information about the suspects or the vehicle used to come forward, assuring that such information will be treated with utmost confidentiality.
