Niger Govt Vows to Clamp Down on Content Creators Over Misinformation, Bring Them Under NUJ
The Niger State Government has warned content creators in the state against disseminating misinformation through their social media platforms.
The Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Obed Nuhu, gave the warning during an event to herald the World Public Relations Forum by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) scheduled to take place in Abuja in November 2026.
Nuhu, who spoke after an early morning walkout as part of activities to prepare for the forum, said those creating unnecessary contents are using their phones and data to cause tension and mislead the people.
“The state government is really against misinformation and activities of some content creators who indulge in malicious and injurious information.
“Under Governor Umaru Bago-led administration, we will do all we can to ensure we bring all practitioners with the right qualifications under one roof of the Nigeria Union of Journalists,” he said.
“If we can not end their unethical activities, we should at least check and reduce it to the barest minimum,” Nuhu added.
He charged members of the NIPR to be professional and responsible, stressing that it was high time to get things done rightly.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Niger State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Dr Abu Nmodu, commended the leadership of the state chapter of the NIPR, noting that content creators in the state would be made to face the law for misinformation and unethical behaviour.
Nmodu called on the state government and policy makers to engage more with professional journalists and mainstream media practitioners, saying it would be more beneficial than relying on content creators.
“If you strategically engage with the mainstream media it will be more beneficiary than the content creators,” he advised.
The Niger State Chairman of the NIPR, Alhaji Mamuld Abdullahi, said the upcoming World Public Relations Forum is a once-in-a-lifetime event.
“You know this event, the World Forum is a once in a lifetime event and this thing is coming to Nigeria. For you to travel out of the shores of this country to attend such a conference is a huge money. Now that it is in our doorstep, we want to take advantage of it and get all our members to have this experience.
“126 countries to converge in Abuja, is a good opportunity. We are informing our people, enlightening them and even the state to participate actively,” Abdullahi said.
