Nigerian Army Investigates Captain Etim Essien Of 3 Division Jos Over Alleged Sexual Abuse Of Minor

The Nigerian Army has opened investigation into alleged sexual abuse involving a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, currently serving at Headquarters 3 Division, Jos, Plateau State.

The Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olumide Victor Olukoya, confirmed this in a statement on Thursday, September 11, 2026, following reports circulating online.

According to the Army, the allegation borders on sexual abuse involving a minor and other vulnerable persons, which it said it takes with utmost seriousness.

“The Nigerian Army is aware of reports circulating online concerning an allegation of sexual abuse involving a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, currently serving at Headquarters 3 Division, Jos,” the statement said.

Olukoya said appropriate steps have already been initiated to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the reported incident.

He said it would be inappropriate to make definitive comments on the culpability or otherwise of Captain Essien at this stage, as the matter is under investigation.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to due process, fairness and the protection of the rights and dignity of all parties involved,” he said.

The statement added that the Army is aware that relevant civil authorities are also looking into the matter and will cooperate fully with them to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation in accordance with extant laws and regulations.

“The Nigerian Army places a high premium on discipline, professionalism and respect for human dignity. Upon the conclusion of the investigation, any personnel found to have acted contrary to the law or established service regulations will be dealt with appropriately,” Olukoya assured.

He urged members of the public to refrain from speculation and dissemination of unverified information capable of prejudicing the investigation or compromising the privacy and wellbeing of persons involved, particularly the minor.

“Further information will be provided as appropriate, subject to the requirements of the law and the integrity of the investigative process,” the statement concluded.
