Report To Environment Ministry, Not Us, If Cows Roam Abuja — Police

The Nigeria Police Force says controlling cows roaming the streets of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, is not its responsibility.

Police spokesperson, Ani Iniedu, stated this on Wednesday at the joint security spokespersons’ briefing in Abuja, while responding to questions about the increasing presence of cattle on roads and public spaces in the capital.

Iniedu explained that animal control falls under environmental authorities, adding that police will only intervene when roaming cattle commit an offence.

“The responsibility for the control of animals is the Ministry or Department of the Environment. Where we come in is if the cow has committed an offence or the cow is involved in the destruction of your property or trespassing your property. If that is the case, it is reported to the nearest police station,” he said.

He said the force would investigate any formal complaint lodged over offences involving cattle.

“We will commence the investigation immediately. That is if a complaint was made. If it is going out to look for cows, it is not one of our responsibilities,” Iniedu added.
