Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have foiled a coordinated multi-directional attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Kukawa, Borno State, killing over 25 insurgents and recovering arms and ammunition.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday, October 7, 2026, by the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, the terrorists attacked troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion in large numbers from four different flanks.

The terrorists met stiff resistance as troops responded with superior firepower, tactical manoeuvre and effective battlefield coordination.

Supported by the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI, the troops overwhelmed the terrorists, inflicted heavy casualties and forced the surviving fighters to flee in disarray. Preliminary assessment indicates that over 25 terrorists were neutralised, with 14 bodies recovered so far.

During exploitation of the area, troops recovered six AK-47 rifles and other ammunition. The Army said further exploitation is ongoing to recover additional weapons, track the fleeing terrorists and prevent regrouping.

“Regrettably, some gallant soldiers paid the supreme sacrifice during the encounter. The Nigerian Army extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen heroes and stands with them at this difficult moment. Their courage, sacrifice and devotion to duty will remain an enduring testament to their service to the nation. May their souls rest in peace,” Captain Goni said.

The Army said the decisive defeat underscores the combat readiness, resilience and fighting effectiveness of Nigerian troops in the North East Theatre, and demonstrates the growing effectiveness of air-ground synergy in disrupting terrorist activities.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its determination to sustain operational pressure on terrorists and criminal elements through aggressive patrols, intelligence-led operations and coordinated offensive actions with sister Services and other security agencies.
