“We Do Not Seek To Islamise Or Christianise Anyone” — Peter Obi Visits Sultan Of Sokoto, Preaches Unity, Hope For Poor
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Mr Peter Obi, has said his mission is to build a united Nigeria where no citizen is discriminated against on the basis of tribe or faith.
Obi stated this on Monday during a courtesy visit to His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, ahead of his town-hall engagement in Sokoto State.
In a statement on his official handle, Obi said he visited the Sultan alongside his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and members of their team, and used the opportunity to condole with him on the recent death of the Sardauna of Sokoto.
“In my remarks, I emphasised the urgent need to unite and secure our nation, tackle poverty, create employment, and rebuild confidence in our country,” Obi said.
According to him, the Sultan warmly received the delegation and spoke with the wisdom of a father and national leader. He recalled that the Sultan has known him for almost 46 years, since 1980 when he was in his first year at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Obi quoted the Sultan as reminding them that leadership comes from Almighty Allah and carries a responsibility for which leaders will ultimately be held accountable, and listed three critical priorities for Nigeria as security, poverty and employment.
He said the Sultan also reminded them that Nigeria’s diversity of tribes, tongues and faiths is part of God’s creation and should be strength, not weakness.
“We do not seek to Islamise or Christianise anyone. We seek to build a Nigeria where every citizen can live safely, prosper, and have a genuine sense of belonging,” Obi added.
He prayed for God’s blessing upon the Sultan, the people of Sokoto State and Nigeria, adding that a new Nigeria is possible.
