Amnesty Condemns Brutal Killing Of Sheikh Masussuka In Katsina, Says He Preached Against Extremism
Amnesty International has strongly condemned the brutal killing of renowned Islamic preacher, Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka, who was killed on Monday by gunmen on motorbikes as he stepped out of his house in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, to go for his usual evening preaching.
The human rights group said the Nigerian authorities must immediately and effectively investigate the incident and ensure those suspected of being responsible are brought to justice.
Amnesty described Sheikh Masussuka as a preacher who consistently used his preaching to promote cooperation, peaceful coexistence, interfaith dialogue and understanding among Muslim faithful.
“He was also notable for preaching against violent extremism and radicalization,” Amnesty said.
The organisation noted that the late Islamic cleric faced threats to life and intimidation throughout his life.
The killing occurred at about 7:30pm in front of his residence in Dutsin-Ma, when two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire, killing him and his friend Adamu Abubakar, according to police.
Amnesty’s condemnation comes hours after Katsina State Police Command confirmed the incident and deployed tactical teams to track the fleeing suspects.
Sheikh Masussuka’s death has thrown Dutsin-Ma community into mourning, with followers describing him as a respected scholar who preached peace.
