“Hunger For Kill Us Then” — VeryDarkMan Repays 15-Year-Old Kindness, Gifts Car To Former Neighbour Who Fed His Family

Popular Nigerian social media activist, Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has gifted a car to a former neighbour who helped his family survive hardship over 15 years ago.

In an emotional video shared on his social media pages, VDM presented a red Peugeot 307 hatchback to the man fondly called “Brother Yoruba,” who was his neighbour when they lived in a face-me-I-face-you apartment.

Recounting their struggles, VDM said the man was doing kabukabu (informal taxi service) then and became a lifeline for his family.
“We moved from Dagba to Babakweri house. We were living in a face-me-I-face-you with my mom, and he was our neighbour. This man really helped our life. Hunger for kill us if to say this man no dey our life then,” VDM said.

According to him, his mother was then a teacher at Cornerstone Montessori School earning little, with transportation and feeding becoming a daily struggle.
“Back then, my mom was a teacher. She was not earning much, transportation was difficult. She was using her salary to pay for transport, and food was a problem. In the morning, he’ll carry my mother to school. He’ll drop her off at her workplace, when he closes, he’ll take her back,” he narrated.

VDM added that the man often gave them ₦100 or ₦200 which his mother used to buy basic foodstuffs.
“When we don’t have food to eat, sometimes he’ll say, ‘Ah, take ₦200, take ₦100.’ We will then use this money, we’ll buy dry okro. Dry okro that time, we go buy dry okro ₦20, buy oil ₦10, buy Maggi, buy garri half mudu, buy water, we go chop that one, we go sleep. This man contributed a lot to our life,” he said.

Presenting the car, VDM said the gift was small compared to the kindness shown, adding that he would also give him money to renew the vehicle papers and that the tank was filled with fuel.
“In this life, people need to be good to people, especially kids. You don’t know what somebody might become tomorrow. This man did not see the future, he was just doing his thing on his own,” VDM said.
VDM said his mother only recently remembered mam and asked that they reconnect with him.
