Convener TMG Barrister Abba Hikima Blasts Borno CP Naziru Abdulmajid Over Drug Claim U-Turn, Threatens Legal Action

Kano-based lawyer and Convener of the Tinubu Must Go (TMG) Movement, Barrister Abba Hikima, has launched a scathing attack on the Borno State Police Command under Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, accusing the Command of malicious afterthought and fabricating drug allegations against five innocent youths arrested for wearing “Tinubu Must Go” T-shirts.

Hikima, who posted on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday night shortly after the police made a dramatic U-turn on the case, said the Command somersaulted to allege drug recovery only after Nigerians pointed out that wearing a political T-shirt is not a crime under Nigerian law.

The TMG Convener described the police action as one of the worst cases of incrimination he has ever seen, questioning why the drug allegation was completely absent from the First Information Report (FIR) on which the suspects were charged to court.

He accused CP Naziru Abdulmajid’s Command of descending lower than hoodlums in a desperate attempt to justify the arrest and remand of the youths, and vowed that the movement will take unfailing legal action against the police.

According to Hikima, the attempt to link innocent TMG members with Indian hemp and hard drugs is a shameful cover-up that will not stand legal scrutiny.

The five youths — Baba Aji Gremami, 44; Mustapha Abba Yemen, 28; Abbacha Mohammed Ali, 32; Adam Umar Gubio, 21; and Abdulhamid Mohammed, 21 — were arrested on September 25 at West End Roundabout, Maiduguri, and were arraigned on September 29 for criminal conspiracy and public disturbance.

The Borno Police had initially arraigned the suspects solely for printing T-shirts with the inscription “Tinubu Must Go” with intent to cause breach of peace, citing Sections 60, 78, 79 and 392 of the Borno Penal Code, with no mention of drugs in the FIR.

However, following public outrage and calls for their release by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Command on Wednesday through its spokesman, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, issued a fresh statement claiming that 15 wraps of suspected Indian hemp, 100 tablets suspected to be D5, a shisha pot and scissors were also recovered.
