Bishop Kukah: Stop Blaming INEC And Security Agencies, You Are Responsible For Who You Vote

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah, has warned Nigerians to take responsibility for their choices ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying their votes will determine whether they live or die.

Kukah spoke on Friday at the 70th anniversary celebration of Saint Finbarr’s College, where he charged voters to stop blaming the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, government and security agencies for election failures.

He encouraged Nigerians to use online platforms to research candidates and their past records before casting their ballots, rather than voting based on political promises or party affiliations.

“We can blame INEC, we can blame government. But in the final analysis, nobody is holding a gun to your head and asking you to vote for anyone… Vote to stay alive. We are all largely responsible for the choices we make,” Kukah said.

The fiery cleric said voters must accept that they are responsible for the leaders they elect and the consequences that follow.

The Bishop’s warning comes amid heightened political activities ahead of 2027, with the All Progressives Congress, APC, inaugurating its campaign council in Ogun State and former presidential candidate Peter Obi visiting Kaduna, where he warned politicians against making unrealistic promises.

Kukah’s remarks underscore growing calls for voter responsibility and informed participation as political parties begin early preparations for the next general elections.
